Why do I have to choose a Cost Basis?
Effective January 1, 2012, all shares purchased in non-retirement accounts are considered ‘covered’ shares. MainStay is required to report cost basis to the IRS on all sales of covered shares beginning in 2013; therefore it is necessary for you to select which method we should use when calculating your cost basis. Any shares purchased before January 1, 2012 are considered ‘uncovered’ and do not require cost basis be reported to the IRS by MainStay.
What cost basis methods are available?
Approved methods are: Average Cost, Specific Lot Identification (SLID), First In First Out (FIFO), Last In Last Out (LIFO), High Cost First Out (HIFO), Low Cost First Out (LOFO), and Loss Gain Utilization (LGUT). MainStay’s default method is Average Cost. For a more in-depth description about cost basis methods, please visit mainstayinvestments.com/costbasis.
How do I get the cost basis for each of my Funds?
From the Manage Account page, click on View Cost Basis under Account Options or call 800-MAINSTAY (624-6782). Cost basis for uncovered shares is available for most non-retirement accounts. It is not available for accounts established prior to 1987 and certain other accounts. Shares purchased after January 1, 2012 are considered covered shares.
