The New York Life Foundation Awards $1,000,000 Grant to Camp Fire
NEW YORK, N.Y., January 16, 2013 – Camp Fire, a national nonprofit youth development organization, announced today a three-year, $1,000,000 grant from the New York Life Foundation. The grant supports Camp Fire’s Step-It-Up-2-Thrive initiative for middle and high school youth across the country, supporting them on well-defined journeys to brighter, more hopeful futures. Step-It-Up-2-Thrive was developed by the Thrive Foundation for Youth, a philanthropic organization that encourages young people to reach their full potential.
“We’re proud that Camp Fire is the first national organization to scale up the Thrive Foundation for Youth’s cutting-edge, research-based methodology into our programming and training,” said Cathy Tisdale, president and CEO, Camp Fire. “We share a common belief that every child has inherent strengths that should be uncovered, shaped and shared with the world. With the support from the New York Life Foundation, we continue to strengthen Camp Fire’s promise to help young people discover who they are and become actively engaged in contributing and connecting to the world around them.”
“The New York Life Foundation has been a long-time supporter of Camp Fire because, like us, they see the potential for success in every child. Together we will help improve the lives of children and families nationwide,” said Chris Park, president of the New York Life Foundation.
At Camp Fire, young people work in small groups nurtured by trained adults, who help them identify their “sparks”— skills, talents or interests that motivate middle and high school youth and give their lives meaning. Step-It-Up-2-Thrive methodology highlights the importance of developing self-reflection and goal management skills.
Last year’s Camp Fire Thrive locations were: Anchorage, AK; Birmingham, AL; Long Beach, CA; Des Moines, IA; Grand Rapids, MI; Tulsa, OK; Austin and Fort Worth, TX; and Everett and Seattle, WA. This year, Camp Fire Thrive locations will also include: Toccoa, GA; Salem, MA; Bowie, MD; Minneapolis, MN; Kansas City, MO; Trenton, NJ; Findlay, OH; Amarillo and Dallas, TX; and Spokane, WA. By 2015, tens of thousands of young people nationwide will have benefited from Camp Fire’s Step-It-Up-2-Thrive program.
