Questions and Answers About Privacy at www.newyorklife.com

What information is collected by newyorklife.com and how is it used?
You can use most of our site without submitting any personal information. The on-line calculators, worksheets, the article recommendation tool, "identifying financial priorities" and information about our products and services can all be accessed without providing any personally-identifiable information about yourself. When you do choose to provide us with information at the site, we will use it in the following restricted ways:

  • Personal Folder
If you decide to create a Personal Folder, we ask you to answer a series of questions regarding your family situation, financial goals, and basic demographics. This helps us to provide you with a Personal Folder containing articles that will be most relevant to you. In addition, you are prompted to enter a username, which you will use to access your Personal Folder, and a screen name, which we will use to refer to you. You can return at any time to modify the information in the Personal Folder. This information is used solely for the Personal Folder and is not combined with any other information. It will not be shared with anyone inside or outside of New York Life.

  • When You Request to be Contacted
If you would like to receive any additional information, such as a brochure, you will need to provide us with your contact information. We will use this information only to fulfill your request. When you ask to be contacted by an agent, we will identify an appropriate New York Life agent to whom we will relay your request.

  • Job Applicants
Our site also provides information about careers at New York Life and about becoming a New York Life agent. Should you choose to submit your resume on-line, it will be forwarded to the people responsible for filling the relevant position. No other use is made of this information.

  • Virtual Service Center This link will open an external site in a new browser.
If you are an existing New York Life customer, you can use our Virtual Service Center to access and update your policy information. To access the Virtual Service Center, you will need to register a User Name and Password. Click on the Register Now button on the Virtual Service Center login page to begin registering. You will need to provide your Last Name, Social Security Number, Date of Birth and Policy Number before you can create a User Name and Password. In addition, you must also select a Secret Question and Answer in the event you ever forgot your User Name or Password. See our Virtual Service Center Login Help page for more details about how to register.

  • Technical Information
Like many Web sites, we collect limited anonymous information about our users and their systems. When users come to our site, we collect their IP addresses, browser types, the domain they came from, and their likely country of origin. This anonymous information is aggregated and is not associated with individual users. It is collected to help us analyze usage patterns, improve the site's overall performance, and provide information useful to our users.

How can I review and update my policy or account information and how can I modify information in my Personal Folder?
If you own a New York Life product or policy, you can access the Virtual Service Center to view and, in some cases, modify information concerning your products and policies. For example, you can download a variety of service forms, change your User Name or Password, or check the loan value of your life insurance policy. For more details about viewing your policy information, please visit our Virtual Service Center.

If you are not a New York Life customer, we will only have the information you choose to provide when you establish your Personal Folder. If you would like to modify this information, you may do so when accessing your Personal Folder.

We do not merge the information provided to create a Personal Folder with that of customers using the Virtual Service Center or with our off-line information. This means that if you are a New York Life customer who has also set up a Personal Folder and you would like to change your personal information, you will need to change your information in both sections of the Web site.

How does newyorklife.com use cookies?
Like other Web sites, newyorklife.com uses cookies. A cookie is a small text file containing a unique identifier that is placed on your computer when you visit our site. In the Virtual Service Center, we use temporary cookies to store information so that our server can properly identify your computer. We also use these cookies to generate meaningful usage statistics by identifying how many unique visitors entered the site and the specific pages that they visited. In order to protect your privacy, no personal information of any kind is stored. When you close your browser, these temporary cookies are deleted. Cookies do not damage your system or files in any way.

Most browsers recognize when a cookie is offered and allow users to opt-out of receiving them. If you are not sure whether your browser has this capability, you should check with the software manufacturer or your Internet Service Provider (ISP). Please be aware that if you choose to disable cookies, you will be unable to access the Virtual Service Center.

In addition to the temporary cookie used by the Virtual Service Center, newyorklife.com also places a temporary cookie on your computer every time you sign in to your "Personal Folder." This cookie allows us to greet you by your screen name and, more importantly, allows you access to the information that you have saved in your Personal Folder, as well as any information your agent has sent to your Personal Folder (if applicable). When you leave newyorklife.com, this cookie expires. Newyorklife.com only uses the information gathered in the Personal Folder to analyze usage trends and demographics. We do not share this information with any third parties.

Does newyorklife.com use Web Beacons or so-called "Web bugs"?
We employ a service through WebSideStory, Inc. called Hitbox Enterprise, which collects data remotely through the use of Web "Beacons" or tags embedded in newyorklife.com content. Hitbox then returns that completely anonymous data to New York Life as site traffic reports. The following is from the Hitbox Privacy Policy, which can be accessed in its entirety by clicking here.

We do not receive any personal information submitted to third party sites using our HitBox service. Our HitBox service does not collect or report any such information and we do not allow our HitBox clients to deliver this information to us. Because we receive no such personal information from visitors to our HitBox clients' sites, we cannot associate, merge or link any anonymous information we do receive with any personal information of any Internet users.

Our Web pages contain images (called a "single-pixel gif" or "Web beacon") that allow us to count page views or to collect other anonymous data from our HitBox cookies. In general, any electronic image viewed as part of a Web page, including an ad banner, can act as a Web beacon. Web beacons are typically very small, usually 1 by 1 pixel in size, but their presence can be easily seen within Internet Explorer by clicking on "View" and then on "Source." Web beacons are small in order to minimize both their display and their loading time. Our Web beacons do not collect, gather, monitor or share any personal information about our Web site visitors; they are merely the technique we use to compile anonymous, aggregated statistics about a Web site's usage.
