Funds will support program designed to help students stay in school
Colorado Springs, Colo. Junior Achievement Inc. announced today that it has received a $300,000 grant from the New York Life Foundation. The funds will support the implementation of Junior Achievement's The Economics of Staying in School (ESIS) program in at-risk schools at 13 locations nationwide.
The Economics of Staying in School, which is taught at the upper elementary and middle-grade level, explains the economic benefits of having an education. The program teaches students about making informed choices about their education, careers, budgets and other personal economic decisions.
"This generous grant from the New York Life Foundation is another example of its long-standing commitment to improving the lives of at-risk youth," said David S. Chernow, president and CEO of Junior Achievement. "The Foundation's strong support for Junior Achievement programming continues to enhance the educational opportunities available to these children."
In addition to the ESIS program, the grant will also support implementation of Junior Achievement's Job Shadow program at 100 locations nationwide. Through Job Shadow, students explore the world of work by accompanying employees at local businesses during the workday. Job shadowing will serve as a supplement to what students learn from the ESIS program.
"The New York Life Foundation is proud to support Junior Achievement's ESIS and Job Shadow programs, which demonstrate to young people the value of staying in school," said Sy Sternberg, chairman, president and chief executive officer of New York Life Insurance Company. "We are delighted that this grant will enable children to learn valuable lessons that will help maximize their potential."
The New York Life Foundation grant funds implementation of the ESIS program in the following areas: Atlanta, Ga.; Chicago, Ill.; Cleveland, Oh.; Dallas, Tex.; Kansas City, Mo.; Lafayette, La.; Minneapolis, Minn.; New York City and Long Island, N.Y.; Phoenix, Ariz.; Pittsburgh, Pa.; San Diego, Ca.; San Ramon, Ca.; and Tampa, Fla.
