Thanks to the Internet, job searching has become easier than ever. Here are some tips you can use for landing your next job:
- Sign up for personalized e-mail job alerts. Let the search engines of the major job search sites do the work for you. Choose the daily delivery option, if possible, but limit your Web surfing each day.
- Job hunt through professional organizations. Many of the best jobs are advertised within groups that hold a captive audience of qualified candidates. For a listing of professional societies, research institutions, government agencies and other non-profit organizations, see www.careerresource.net
.
- Look for jobs through your college contacts. Visit your university's Web site for alumni career information.
- Did You Know...?
You may be able to deduct job-searching expenses (such as printing, postage, and air fare) on your 1040, as a miscellaneous deduction, if those expenses exceed 2% of your adjusted gross income and if you?re looking for a job in your same field. Other miscellaneous deductions (to help exceed the 2% AGI threshold) include tax preparation fees. For more details, see IRS Publication 529 at www.irs.gov .
- Helpful Hint...
Make sure to negotiate the best offer you can before you sign a contract. If you can't raise your salary, other benefits include bonuses, vacation time, an accelerated salary review, and a severance package.
