Funds will support program designed to help students stay in school
Colorado Springs, Colo., December 12, 2002 Junior Achievement Inc. (JA) announced today that it received a $250,000 grant from the New York Life Foundation, the charitable giving arm of New York Life Insurance Company. The funds will support the implementation of JA's The Economics of Staying in School (ESIS) program in at-risk schools in 17 communities nationwide. This is the Foundation's second grant in support of the ESIS program.
The Economics of Staying in School, which is taught at the upper elementary and middle-grade level, advises students on the economic benefits of having an education. The program teaches them to make informed choices about their education, careers, budgets and other personal economic decisions.
New York Life employees and agents, along with other JA volunteers, were able to reach more than 5,500 at-risk students at dozens of schools through the Foundation's first ESIS grant. Since 1998, the Foundation's support to JA totals $1,050,000 through four separate grants.
"The New York Life Foundation is an outstanding supporter of Junior Achievement. Their commitment to improving the lives of at-risk youth is admirable," said David S. Chernow, president and CEO of Junior Achievement. "This grant will allow students in 17 cities across the United States to have better access to JA's ESIS program and learn the benefits of staying in school and improving the quality of their lives through education."
"We are proud to continue to support ESIS, an outstanding program which provides children nationwide with both the educational resources and the confidence they need to succeed," said Sy Sternberg, chairman and chief executive officer of New York Life and chairman of the New York Life Foundation. "Enriching educational opportunities for youth is a chief focus of our Nurturing the Children initiative."
This New York Life Foundation grant will fund implementation of the ESIS program in the following JA areas: Albuquerque; Atlanta; Chicago; Cleveland; Dallas; Fort Lauderdale; Fullerton, CA; Houston; Kansas City; Lafayette, LA; Minneapolis; New York City; Phoenix; Pittsburgh; San Diego; San Ramon, CA; and Tampa.
