New York Life Names College Internship Summer Sales Contest Winners

  • Benjamin Richey, National Winner and Pacific Zone Winner
  • Eric Bascom, West Central Zone Winner
  • Nathan Dempsey, North East Zone Winner
  • Derek Smith, South Central Zone Winner

NEW YORK, N.Y., December 1, 2003 - New York Life Insurance Company announced today the winners of the company's annual College Internship Summer Sales Contest. The winners were selected based on the highest numbers of submitted life insurance applications in each geographic region.

"New York Life is proud to offer this exceptional educational opportunity to college students exploring careers in the life insurance industry," said Jeffrey Jones, senior college recruiting consultant, New York Life. "Our four interns who won the sales contest demonstrated outstanding client service abilities and, as a result of what they've learned through New York Life's college agent internship program, have promising futures ahead of them."

New York Life's internship program attracted over 300 students from across the country this year. In this program, interns obtain the skills they need to become successful agents through regular one-on-one contact with agent mentors as well as the active involvement of New York Life managers. During the program, students are able to obtain their agent license and begin working with clients. The contest was held for the period between June 1 and August 31, 2003.

Benjamin Richey, winner in the Pacific Zone, is the most successful college student in the history of this competition, having submitted the most cases ever by an intern. Three generations of his family members have worked for New York Life, including his father, Agent Stephen Richey in the Utah General Office. Originally from Ogden, Utah, Benjamin Richey is in his senior year at Weber State University where he is studying communications and sales.

Eric Bascom is this year's West Central Zone Winner and will be graduating this month from Brigham Young University with a degree in communications. The Murray, Utah native worked with Managing Partner Thomas McConathy along with agent mentors, father-in-law Larry Richardson, and brother-in-law Seth Richardson.

Nathan Dempsey, the North East Zone winner and Goffstown, New Hampshire native, is in his senior year at Southern New Hampshire University with a major in marketing and a minor in finance. He worked with Mark Perreault, a partner in the New Hampshire General Office.

Derek Smith in the Columbus General Office is this year's winner for the South Central Zone. This is the second consecutive year that the Columbus General Office was awarded. Originally from Findlay, Ohio, Derek Smith is a junior at Ohio State University, where he is double majoring in finance and management information systems. He worked with Managing Partner Amelia Scott, and Agents Joseph Crotty and last year's South Central Zone winner, Andrew Recker, served as mentors.
