HEAF New York Life Scholars Program Established To Develop Skills, Motivate Students
NEW YORK, NY, February 20, 2003 — The Harlem Educational Activities Fund (HEAF), an educational and youth development organization, announced today that it was awarded a two-year $291,000 grant from the New York Life Foundation to establish the HEAF New York Life Scholars Program. This new initiative will provide high-potential HEAF students with special enrichment activities aimed at developing their academic and leadership skills.

"The creation of the HEAF New York Life Scholars Program will enable students to enhance their prospects for a fulfilling academic future."

"Their commitment to this initiative means that HEAF students will have a special opportunity for early exposure to college courses and a chance to explore their educational and cultural horizons with other high performing students at some of the nation's leading liberal arts institutions. This program will enable us to more effectively prepare our young people to become leaders in their schools and communities."
The HEAF New York Life Scholars Program will offer academic enrichment to the top 25 students in grades 7 - 11 at HEAF. These specially selected students will benefit from a challenging summer academic program offered by the prestigious Summer Institute for the Gifted on one of six college campuses. In addition, New York Life Scholars will participate in special educational activities such as workshops, field trips and symposia throughout the school year. All HEAF students have been encouraged to apply for admission into this competitive program, and the first group of 25 program participants will be announced in the Spring.
The Harlem Educational Activities Fund is a comprehensive education and youth development organization that helps public school students from educationally and/or economically disadvantaged communities in Harlem and Washington Heights develop the intellectual and life skills required of tomorrow's global leaders. HEAF identifies students performing at the margin and works with them to shape a vision and path for educational success. HEAF offers young students and their families more than ten years of sequential, age appropriate academic support and youth development services that address the needs and interests of students from middle school through college graduation.
