New York Life Scholars

Alkindo Harper, HEAF New York Life Scholar (second from left), poses with (pictured from left to right) Kevin S. Smith, Program Officer, New York Life Foundation, Sharon Harper, Scholar's mother, Robin Fleshman, Associate Director, Harlem Educational Activities Fund (HEAF), and Barbara Ghyll, Vice President, HEAF, at the New York Life HEAF Scholars event on Saturday, April 12, 2003. The HEAF New York Life Scholars Program will offer academic enrichment to the top 25 students in grades 7-11 at HEAF, an education and youth development organization that helps public school students from educationally and/or economically disadvantaged communities in Harlem and Washington Heights. The students were recently selected and will benefit from a summer academic program offered by the Summer Institute for the Gifted on one of six college campuses. The Scholars will also participate in special educational activities such as writing workshops, field trips and symposia throughout the school year. The April 12 event recognized and welcomed the new students and their families to the program, which is funded by a grant from the New York Life Foundation, the major vehicle through which New York Life Insurance Company channels contributions to nonprofit organizations. Through its Nurturing the Children initiative, the Foundation supports organizations, programs and services that target young people, particularly in the areas of educational enhancement, mentoring, and safe places to learn and grow.
