Black-necked Crane

The only alpine Crane in the world, the Black-necked Crane, breeds near some of the high altitude lakes of Ladakh in Indai. The Black-necked Crane is a spiritual symbol of the local people and is depicted alongside many deities in the monasteries of the region. The estimated world population of the species is just between 5,600 and 6,000 individuals. The major threats to its survival are cultivation and increasing human activity in its breeding grounds.
