Grant Funds Enrichment Program At Three Staten Island Middle Schools
NEW YORK, N.Y., September 18, 2006 — The United Activities Unlimited announced today it is being awarded a four-year, $459,000 grant from the New York Life Foundation. The grant supports Project Succeed, a new after-school and evening program that will serve students at three intermediate schools located in Staten Island’s North Shore Community: I.S. 27, I.S. 51 and I.S. 61.
The grant will provide after-school programming that focuses on technology and academic enrichment, while the evening program will provide a safe haven emphasizing activities that teach social and civic skills.
“This grant from the New York Life Foundation will help provide information and skills to underserved youth who currently lack constructive places to go after school to enhance their academic and life skills,” said Louis DeLuca, CEO, United Activities Unlimited. “The hands-on support they will receive will help these students at a critical stage in their lives.”
“We are pleased to support a multifaceted program that helps young people develop their academic and social skills in a safe and nurturing environment,” said Peter Bushyeager, president of the New York Life Foundation. “By providing a comprehensive array of classes and group activities ranging from reading and science to career exploration and community service, Project Succeed will help young adults make a successful transition to high school and beyond.”
The pilot is set to launch at I.S. 51 during this school year and will serve up to 225 students. During the 2007-2008 academic year, the program will roll out to two additional schools, I.S. 27 and I.S. 61, and will serve a minimum of 675 students each year for the remaining two years of the grant.
United Activities Unlimited serves at-risk and socially disadvantaged Staten Island youth. Since its founding in 1977, United Activities Unlimited has developed a network of 20 evening and after-school centers that provide diverse programming for youth aged 6-21.
