Underserved Local Elementary School Receives Grant For Team Sponsorship Program
NEW YORK, N.Y., DECEMBER 5, 2007 – City Year New York announced today that it has
received a three-year, $318,000 grant from the New York Life Foundation to support their Team Sponsorship Program
at P.S. 154 in the Hunts Point section of the South Bronx. The Team Sponsorship Program will offer elementary
school students in-school tutoring and mentoring, literacy intervention, library initiatives, civic-based lunch
clubs and an educational enrichment service-based after-school program.
“This generous grant from the New York Life Foundation will give nearly 500 elementary school students the
opportunity to improve their academic skills and participate in social enrichment programs that affect the
community in a constructive way,” said Itai Dinour, executive director, City Year. “We are grateful for the New
York Life Foundation’s investment in this program, which will have a lasting effect on the entire community.”
"We are proud to fund a program that will allow young students to receive the support they need to improve
academically and gain a sense of civic responsibility,” said Christine Park, president of the New York Life
Foundation. “The Foundation’s support will enable City Year to provide the children of Hunts Point with
personal, meaningful help and a chance to help their community.”
City Year identified Hunts Point as a community in need because statistics indicate 48.9 percent of children
under the age of 18 live in poverty.
The City Year Team Sponsorship Program supports teams of 10-12 Corps Members at specific schools. These Corps
Members begin their service in September and are assigned communities and school partnerships where they work
Monday through Thursday. With support of the Department of Education, the Corps Members work directly with
school administration, staff, and students to provide an all-day school presence that includes support in-school,
after school and in the community.
