Company Receives Perfect Score On Corporate Equality Index

NEW YORK, N.Y., September 5, 2008 — New York Life Insurance Company has earned the top rating of 100 percent in the 2009 Corporate Equality Index (CEI), an annual survey administered by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation. New York Life joins the ranks of 259 other major U.S. businesses which get top marks for their treatment of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) employees and consumers.

The CEI rated 583 businesses in total, evaluating LGBT–related policies and practices including non–discrimination policies, transgender health benefits and domestic partner benefits. New York Life’s efforts in ensuring LGBT equality in each of the survey’s main criterion earned it the prestigious 100 percent ranking.

The Corporate Equality Index is the Foundation’s annual report card, rating employers on their treatment of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender employees, consumers and investors, using a scale from 0 to 100 percent. The top–rated businesses are recognized on the “Best Places to Work” list.

“We are proud to receive a perfect score of 100 on the Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s Corporate Equality Index this year,” said Katherine O’Brien, vice president and chief diversity officer, New York Life. “As a company we are committed to maintaining an inclusive work environment built upon mutual respect, trust and fair treatment, where individual differences are valued and celebrated and all employees have the opportunity for personal and professional growth and are encouraged to reach their full potential. This recognition underscores our serious commitment.”

In addition, New York Life appears with other consumer–oriented businesses in the Foundation’s Buying for Equality guide. The Buying for Equality guide lists how each company scored on the Corporate Equality Index and provides this information in an effort to encourage consumers to support products from companies that support gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender equality.
