Our commitment to you
New York Life is proud to be a leader in supporting the LGBT community through inclusive workplace practices and initiatives as well as our partnerships with groups that serve the community and raise awareness of LGBT issues.
Within New York Life
NYLPrideWe sponsor this employee resource group to raise awareness of LGBT issues at New York Life, provide a forum for discussing issues and to organize events that advance LGBT causes.
NYLPride encourages and nurtures a diverse, open, and inclusive work culture where gay, lesbian and transgender employees can maximize their professional growth and contribute fully to their individual success and the success of New York Life.
Celebrating diversity in the workplaceWe foster a culture in which all employees and their individual differences are not only accepted, but celebrated. In 2013, New York Life was named one of the top 50 companies to work for by Diversity Inc.
As part of our commitment to diversity and inclusion, we offer fair and equal benefits for all employees, including a variety of health benefits to their spouses and domestic partners and other benefits such as adoption assistance.
Human Rights CampaignWe have consistently achieved high scores on the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Corporate Equality Index, including receiving a perfect score (100 percent) three years in a row (2009-2011). This index ranks companies on a scale from 0 to 100 percent on several factors, including employee benefits, training programs, support networks, advertising, marketing, and contributions to the LGBT community.
We are also members of Out & Equal Workplace Advocates, a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating safe and equitable workplaces for LGBT people.
Amicus BriefIn February 2013, we joined some of the country’s largest and most highly-regarded companies in filing a supporting brief with the United States Supreme Court, urging it to overturn a section of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) that denies recognition and federal benefits to same-sex couples. In June 2013, the Court overturned DOMA.
We support a number of LGBT organizations through the New York Life Foundation with grants totaling over $350k including:
- New York City’s LGBT Community Center’s youth development program
- Hedrick-Martin Institute serving youth throughout New York City and Newark, New Jersey
- The Trevor Project, an organization dedicated to serving LGBT youth and suicide prevention.
- Services and Advocacy for LGBT Elders (SAGE)
- The Aqua Foundation
Our business endeavors
We view the LGBT community as an important part of our customer base.
Above all, our agents understand some of the unique needs LGBT clients may face. Since both state and federal laws are changing and affecting the LGBT market, it’s nice to know that a New York Life agent is ready to work with you.
In 2010, our first marketing campaign aimed at the LGBT community was launched. The LGBT Initiative, began in the San Francisco, Seattle and Boston metropolitan areas, has expanded into a full market that covers the country.
Two years ago, we launched our first LGBT website.
We are a member of the National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce, as well as two of the largest and oldest LGBT chambers in the country. The Greater Seattle Business Association and The Golden Gate Business Association (San Francisco).
Your bottom line is our bottom lineOur commitment to you and to the LGBT community is grounded in values that drive everything we do; financial strength, integrity, and humanity.
- Financial strength so you know that we’ll be there for you when you need us.
- Integrity so you know that everything we do is about what’s right for you not what’s right for us.
- Humanity so you know that we are committed to your community for the long-run.
These are exciting times. Yesterday’s dreams are fast becoming today’s realities and possibilities.
We are proud to be a partner in the journey.
