ELIGIBILITY

Eligible Organizations
Grants are made only to private, nonprofit organizations that have tax-exempt status under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and are not private foundations.

Organizations ineligible for funding include: sectarian or religiously oriented organizations; political, fraternal, professional, veterans' or industry groups; government agencies; membership groups or clubs and their foundations; private and community foundations; schools and institutions of higher education; advocacy groups; local United Ways; groups ineligible to receive grants under state or federal law; and those representing a conflict of interest for the Foundation or the Company.

Organizations that have received $10,000 or more from the New York Life Foundation in the past year are ineligible.

Organizations that have received a Foundation Awards Program Grant in the past may apply, but not for the same program, and not in consecutive years.

Operating Budget
An eligible organization's current fiscal year operating budget may not exceed $5 million. Local chapters of large national organizations may apply if they manage their own local budgets of not more than $5 million.

Financial Statements
The organization must provide financial statements covering their previous fiscal year as stipulated by New York State law. (Financial statements audited by a CPA are required for organizations with gross revenue and support in excess of $250,000. Organizations with gross revenue and support of less than $250,000 must submit a financial report certified by their officers, or they may submit their IRS 990 forms if they are completed by a CPA.) Local chapters of large national organizations must show their distinct operating budgets.

Staff
Eligible organizations must have at least two full-time paid staff members and provide a list of their board of directors or trustees.

Geographic Considerations
The New York Life Foundation Awards Program is open to organizations headquartered in one of New York City's five boroughs - Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island - and Westchester County. Organizations based outside New York City or Westchester County that operate programs in those areas are not eligible. Organizations with multiple programs in different locations within New York City and/ or Westchester should submit an application for their strongest program.

REVIEW AND SELECTION PROCESS
Foundation staff will initially screen applications to determine general eligibility and adherence to our guidelines, then review specific programs to determine how well their activities match the focus of the Foundation's Educational Enhancement category. Finalists will be reviewed more intensely and will receive site visits. After the final review, one nonprofit from each area will receive an Awards Program Grant.
