NEW YORK, N.Y., January 18, 2010 - New York Life Insurance Company announced today it will donate $100,000 to aid and support earthquake relief efforts in Haiti, and additionally donate up to $150,000 in matching contributions by employees and agents.
Ted Mathas, chairman, president and chief executive officer of New York Life, said, "On behalf of the entire New York Life family, we extend our heartfelt sympathy to all those affected by the devastating earthquake in Haiti's capital, Port-au-Prince, and surrounding areas. The destruction is widespread and devastating; the loss of life and the number of injured are overwhelming. The families caught in the disaster area and the rescue workers making valiant efforts to save lives have been in our thoughts and prayers since we learned of this tragic event and accordingly, the company will be making a contribution to help those in need."
Mr. Mathas said that New York Life will immediately donate $100,000 to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund for Haiti, and the company will be matching employee, retiree, and agent contributions, up to $150,000. In addition to the Red Cross, the company has identified seven other groups that are playing a major role in the relief effort: AmeriCares, CARE, Heart to Heart International, Save the Children, United Nations World Food Program, UNICEF, and United Way Worldwide Disaster Fund. Employees and agents can designate any organization or combination of organizations to receive funds, and the company will match the contribution dollar-for-dollar.
