NEW YORK, N.Y., September 22, 2010 — New York Life Insurance Company today announced that Elizabeth Varley has joined the company as a vice president for federal affairs in the Office of Governmental Affairs, based in the company's Washington office. She will report to George Nichols III, senior vice president in charge of the Office of Governmental Affairs.
Ms. Varley will be involved in various governmental issues, with her primary focus on the increasingly active federal policy area of retirement security and pensions. Prior to joining New York Life, Ms. Varley served as managing director for government affairs for the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (SIFMA), a post she held for more than 11 years.
Prior to SIFMA, Ms. Varley was counsel to the U.S. Senate Special Committee on Aging, and before that she was a staff attorney for the Bipartisan Commission on Entitlement & Tax Reform.
Ms. Varley holds a law degree from the University of Nebraska, where she also earned her undergraduate degree. She resides in Virginia.
