In recognition of the ongoing involvement of New York Life agents, employees and retirees in community-based nonprofit organizations, the Foundation makes grants to local grassroots agencies with which they volunteer their time. In general, grants of up to $500 are made. However, organizations whose mission and purpose are directed toward serving children may receive up to a maximum of $1,000. Grants are unrestricted, for general operating purposes.

An agent, employee or retired employee who has volunteered with a nonprofit organization with 501(c)(3) IRS designation over a period of at least 12 months for a minimum of 60 hours and is a(n)
- Full-or part-time (20 hours or more weekly) employee with one or more years of continuous service;
- Retired employee;
- Agent who has been under contract with the Company for a minimum of the prior 12 months, is proactive, and a current Council member; or
- Lifetime Council Member.
What is the purpose of this grant?
This program recognizes the ongoing volunteer involvement of New York Life agents, employees and retired employees in community-based nonprofit organizations.
What organizations are eligible for this grant program?
Any qualified nonprofit organization providing services in the United States which is open or available to all members of the community and which has tax-exempt status under Section 501(c)(3) and determined not to be a private foundation under Section 509(a) of the Internal Revenue Code: The organization must be: in existence for more than one year and governed by a Board of Directors.
What organizations are ineligible?
Non-qualifying organizations are sectarian or religiously-oriented organizations; political, fraternal, professional, veterans, or industry groups; government agencies; membership groups or clubs and their foundations; private and community foundations; school districts and their foundations; organizations primarily supported by taxes; advocacy groups; local United Ways; groups ineligible to receive grants under state or federal law; and those representing a conflict of interest for the applicant, the Foundation or the Company.
Grant amounts are generally $500. Nonprofit organizations serving the needs of children may receive the maximum of $1,000. Grants are unrestricted, for general operating purposes.
The New York Life applicant must initiate the application and once the first part is complete, the nonprofit must complete the second part of the application within 30 days. Click on the link on the bottom of this page to apply.
The application process is open from February 1- November 15.
Applications are reviewed and processed on a quarterly basis. Applications must be completed by November 15 to be considered for that calendar year.
How are applications reviewed? (What is the review process for applications?)
The final decision of the Foundation will be based on criteria including the degree to which the organization’s activities contribute to the betterment of the community, the amount of time contributed by the volunteer, the number of applications submitted, and the availability of funds. The New York Life Foundation reserves the right to determine the eligibility of the recommended organizations.
Can I apply for more than one organization per year?
No, you can only apply for one grant per program.
Can I apply for the other volunteer grants offered by the New York Life Foundation?
Yes, you can apply for all three volunteer grants in the same year and may receive all three.
