Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (1929-1968)
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a clergyman and civil rights leader who fought for equality among all people. A Baptist minister in
Montgomery Alabama in 1954, King led the black boycott of segregated city bus lines in 1955 and in 1956 won a major victory when
Montgomery buses desegregated. As the organizer of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), King further pursued
civil-rights causes, employing a philosophy of nonviolent resistance. In 1963, King became an international figure when he led
a protest in Birmingham Alabama and the March on Washington, which brought together 200,000 people. In 1964, he was awarded the Nobel
Peace Prize. On April 4, 1968, he was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee. King's birthday is a Federal holiday and is celebrated on the
nearest Monday to January 15 - his date of birth.
