African-American History Month: Shirley Chisholm

New York Life Celebrates African-American History Month Shirley Chisholm (1924-)
Shirley Chisholm is the first African-American woman elected to the U.S. Congress. She is known as a strong advocate for women, children and minorities. An educator and an expert on childhood education, Chisholm worked with the New York City bureau of child welfare between 1959 and 1964. She served in the New York state assembly between 1964 and 1968. She was then elected to the U.S. House of Representatives as a Democrat, where she served until 1983. Chisholm is the author of Unbought and Unbossed (1970) and The Good Fight (1973).
