African-American History Month: George Washington Carver

New York Life Celebrates African-American History Month George Washington Carver (1864–1943)
George Washington Carver was an agricultural chemist who impacted the field of agriculture forever. Born a slave, Carver graduated later, as a free man, from Iowa State College. He took a post with the Tuskegee Institute and dedicated his life's work to improving the economy in the South (and especially helping African-Americans) through advances in agriculture.

Carver found hundreds of uses for not only the peanut, but also the sweet potato and soybean. He also created many products through cotton waste and worked with pigment extraction from clays. His birthplace was made a national monument in 1953.
