Paul Robeson (1898-1976)
Paul Robeson was a ground-breaking American actor and singer. The son of a runaway slave who became a minister, Paul Robeson graduated first from Rutgers in 1919. While at Rutgers, he was an All–American football player.He then moved on to Columbia University and attended its law school, graduating in 1923. In 1924 he began acting with the Provincetown Players. He won critical acclaim with his creation of the title role in Eugene O'Neill's Emperor Jones in 1925. He also had notable performances in Porgy (1928) and Othello (1930). Also known for his powerful bass voice, he is especially remembered for his rendition of "Ol' Man River" in Jerome Kern's musical Show Boat (1928) and for his interpretations of spirituals.
