New York Life Foundation Award Program

The New York Life Foundation is dedicated to helping young people fulfill their potential and grow into productive adults. To achieve these goals the Foundation established the Nurturing the Children initiative, which devotes the majority of its resources to organizations and programs that provide children with safe places to learn and grow, educational enhancement, and mentoring. Thus far, the Foundation has committed more than $35 million to this initiative.

In 2004, the Foundation expanded its commitment by launching the Awards Program, which recognizes exemplary, innovative Nurturing the Children programs created and managed by smaller charitable organizations not typically recipients of grants from the Foundation.

The annual New York Life Foundation Awards Program provides six $25,000 grants: one in each New York City borough and one in Westchester County. These grants are earmarked for one-time-only support for existing programs.

For the 2009 Awards Program, organizations can only apply for one of their existing programs that provide services that fit the Foundation’s Educational Enhancement category, which includes programs that prepare young people for higher education or the workplace and equip them to be responsible citizens. Activities in this program should: enrich academic performance and educational commitment; provide a foundation in basic skills, such as reading, writing, mathematics, science, and communication; and enhance thinking skills, such as decision-making, problem-solving and reasoning. We are particularly interested in programs serving disadvantaged youth, including those who are in foster care or aging out of foster care, are homeless, or are neither in school nor working.
