New York Life Foundation Commits to Aiding Children of Westchester

NEW YORK, October 29, 2004 — On October 26, the New York Life Foundation announced five grants totaling $65,000 at the official opening of New York Life's new Westchester campus. The grants support the Foundation's Nurturing the Children initiative. These preliminary contributions lay the groundwork for a more expansive grant program to benefit local nonprofit community service organizations beginning next year. The grants are:

  • $10,000 to Family Services of Westchester to support the organization's Junior Youth Council, which introduces pre-teens to the world of community service with training programs and hands-on involvement.
  • $15,000 to the Jewish Council of Yonkers to provide funding for an intergenerational reading program called SMART (Students And Mature Adults Read Together). The program trains older adults to help public school students in Yonkers improve their reading skills.
  • $10,000 to the Kensico Little League to help them begin badly needed refurbishments for their ball field in Valhalla.
  • $15,000 to the Westchester Volunteer Center to fund two projects. The Center will help local nonprofit groups learn how to successfully launch family volunteer projects that bring parents and children together to help their community. This grant will also sponsor two Youth Volunteer Awards that will be presented at the Center's 2005 Volunteers of the Year breakfast.
  • $15,000 awarded to the YMCA of Tarrytown to provide after-school scholarships for low-income children in kindergarten through third grade so they can benefit from the Y's after-school enrichment program.
