Five Top College Students Receive Scholarships and New York Life Marks 50th Year Since Cirilo McSween Became First African-American Agent

NEW YORK, N.Y., January 10, 2007 — New York Life Insurance Company, at a luncheon this week, announced the names of the recipients of the third annual Cirilo A. McSween - New York Life - Rainbow/PUSH Excel Scholarship Award. The scholarships were given to five full-time college students who have achieved academic excellence and played an active role in their communities.
“We are pleased to host the third annual Cirilo A. McSween - New York Life - Rainbow/PUSH Excel Award program. This year’s ceremony takes on new significance, because it marks 50 years since Mr. McSween became the first African-American agent at New York Life,” said Fred Sievert, president of New York Life. “We are pleased to award scholarships to these students who will hopefully follow in the footsteps of Mr. McSween, a trailblazer who continues to succeed in work and in life.”
“It is a pleasure to celebrate this special day with these talented college students. The values they’ve incorporated into their lives to get to where they are today will enable them to succeed. Determination, solid moral principles, academic aspirations, honesty, and humanity have helped me achieve goals in my life and are the foundation for the success I am being honored for here today,” said Mr. McSween, who joined New York Life in 1957.
New York Life and Rainbow/PUSH created this scholarship program in 2004 to honor Mr. McSween, a 26-year qualifying member of the insurance industry’s prestigious Million Dollar Round Table, the premier association of insurance professionals recognized for superior sales and service. Mr. McSween is a current member of the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition’s board of directors, and the president of Cirilo’s Inc. He was also a renowned civil rights activist who worked closely with the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as the national treasurer of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference during the time Dr. King was president of the organization.
