NEW YORK, N.Y., February 5, 2006 - Boys & Girls Clubs of America, the nation’s fastest-growing youth organization now serving more than 4.6 million young people worldwide, announced today that it has received a two-year, $221,000 grant from the New York Life Foundation to rebuild “tech center” computer labs at eight Boys & Girls Clubs in the Gulf Coast region.
“This grant from New York Life will provide the most vulnerable victims of the hurricanes and floods with a sense of normalcy,” said Roxanne Spillett, president, Boys & Girls Clubs of America. “These New York Life Tech Centers will restore educational services, provide a creative outlet, and most importantly, with the available Internet access, children will be able to connect with other young people around the world.” “We’re proud to offer our assistance in the aftermath of such devastation,” said Peter Bushyeager, president of the New York Life Foundation. “It is more important than ever to provide children on the Gulf Coast with safe places to learn.” This grant will replace eight Tech Centers that were destroyed as a result of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The funding will provide software, hardware, installation and support services to return technology services at all Clubs to their to pre-hurricane level. Five sites will receive Club-based New York Life Tech Centers, established in permanent, designated spaces within newly restored or reconstructed facilities. Three Boys & Girls Club organizations will receive New York Life Mobile Tech Centers for their temporary facilities. When Clubs move to permanent facilities, the Tech Center will be installed in the new spaces.
