My Life Before New York Life
With a Master's degree in Organic Chemistry and a career in medical research, no one thought Margaret Tan would choose to sell insurance. "The major reason I was interested in New York Life was its outstanding training program, plus their reimbursement for job-related courses. I wanted to learn how to plan for myself — to take care of my own finances and estate planning."

My Partnership with New York Life
After 18 years as an agent, Margaret says she enjoys her work and her life. "I don't pressure potential clients to buy. I just want to make sure when they leave our meeting, they have learned something they didn't already know." As a result of her sincere concern for others, she has built a large clientele based on referrals.

As a Life Member of the Million Dollar Round Table and a recipient of the National Quality Award, Margaret has proven her theories on sales and success work. "I am quick to realize what people's needs are. I then point out honestly and truthfully what they should be doing. Most people don't plan ahead. I start them thinking about their future and taking steps to ensure their security."

As Margaret has continued to sell insurance, she has continued to grow as well. "New York Life is an amazing place to work. The advanced knowledge and training have been wonderful for me."

My Advice to New Recruits
Real success to Margaret is not just a sale, it's a relationship. Margaret's philosophy is that new agents need to realize the sale is only the beginning of the process, not the end. "They need to provide continual good service in order to develop loyal customers."

"I believe it is often easier for women to make the sale. They understand other women's needs and can relate to them as individuals and in family situations. While selling insurance is not an easy business, if you work at it diligently, it can be one of the most rewarding professions, both financially and mentally."
