My Life Before New York Life
Aurora Saenz has been in financial services for many years. After majoring in business, she began her career in banking. Moving up the ranks over fifteen years, she became a vice president of 1st National Bank, where she was involved in operations, marketing and public relations. When the bank closed during the late 1980s, Aurora decided she wanted a career where "I could be my own boss, plan my own work schedule and have the potential for unlimited income." It was time to leave banking.
My Partnership with New York Life
"I first became acquainted with New York Life when I read a newspaper recruiting ad. Since then, partnering with the company has given me the opportunity to build trusting relationships with customers, choose my own hours, team with other agents and be involved in the community."
In commenting about her specialty, estate planning, Aurora says, "I particularly enjoy helping individuals transfer their wealth to the next generation. Many people don't plan ahead. They live for the moment. I ask my clients, 'Who do you want to get your estate, the IRS or your family?' Then we put together a plan to preserve their financial legacy."
In the nine years since being awarded Rookie of the Year, she has annually qualified for the Million Dollar Round Table and been selected Agent of the Year in 1989, 1992 and 1995. While these awards are tremendous achievements for anyone, they are particularly amazing for Aurora, given her long-term battle with breast cancer and its complications.
"In 1993 I had a bi-lateral mastectomy. I couldn't drive, open doors, pull up chairs, or even dress myself. So my NYLIC (New York Life Insurance Company) family did it for me. They got me ready, took me to appointments and made notes while I talked. If it hadn't been for them and the encouragement of my MDRT family around the world, I don't know how I would have done it."
Suzanne Marie, Aurora's daughter and fellow New York Life agent, has been very supportive, both personally and professionally. "We do a good deal of joint work and she's always there for me. What other career would allow me the flexibility of working with someone I love and the security of knowing she will carry the ball if I can't?"
My Advice to New Recruits
Perhaps Aurora's most salient trait is her desire to share her experience and insights with others. She is often asked to tell her inspirational story to civic and professional organizations. She will even give competitors advice, if they ask for it. "As long as I've been in this business, I've been more than willing to help anyone. After all, life insurance agents' business is helping mankind."
