When it comes to recruiting agents, many of New York Life Insurance Company’s Managing Partners actively seek athletes. Says Mark Koskovich, Managing Partner, New York Life’s Dallas General Office, and former college football player, “All athletes, regardless of skill level, have certain attributes in common — such as organization, motivation, self discipline and time management. Many of our accomplished agents have been involved in athletics.”

Koskovich, who spent two years working as an agent before joining the Company’s management team, says, “Coincidentally, I played on the football team at the University of New Mexico with three other New York Life employees: Managing Partner Mark Biren of the Colorado G.O., Gabe Chavez , a former Partner in the El Paso G.O. who now is the Director of the Hispanic Market in the Corporate Office, and Managing Partner Brad Wright of the Montgomery G.O. — and oddly enough we all came to the Company through unrelated channels.”

Believing these skills help them apply what they’ve learned, he advises new hires to practice constantly — conditioning their sales proficiency just as it would help them get in shape for their sport of choice. “They have to practice their presentation skills daily to experience the rewards,” says Koskovich.

Here’s a brief look at one New York Life Insurance agent whose discipline and determination — both in business and sports — have helped make them who they are today.

Agent William J. Louie, Long Island General Office

Agent Bill Louie has been with New York Life for nearly 20 years and a martial arts champion since he was nine. Louie has won 575 national and international Karate tournaments, been the New York State Karate Champion for the last four years, starred in six Kung Fu movies, and been featured in numerous martial arts magazines. He’s also a Grandmaster and founder of Chinese American Goju Karate.

Louie’s years of learning and teaching Karate have been instrumental to his success in insurance sales. “I’ve learned from the masters, taken what’s useful and applied it to my job,” says Louie. “Knowledge is great, but you need to take it and put it into action — my coined phrase is “Action With Passion.”

He explains, “In order to be successful in anything you choose to put your mind to you must follow through with passion. This is what I have lived by not only in all my Karate endeavors but also throughout my career as an agent with New York Life. Taking the necessary actions, and following through by being thoroughly passionate about teaching and helping my karate students and clients alike, has without a doubt been fundamental to all of my accomplishments.”
