New York Life Foundation Grants $300,000 To Fundación Educa

Three-Year Grant Helps Support the Improvement of Schools in Mexico

NEW YORK, October 22, 2008 — Fundación EDUCA announced that it was awarded a three–year, $300,000 grant from the New York Life Foundation to support the improvement of operations and instruction in schools throughout Mexico. This is the first grant New York Life Foundation has made to an internationally based nonprofit.

“We are grateful to the New York Life Foundation for supporting our efforts to dramatically increase the efficiency and effectiveness of schools as we positively impact thousands of children throughout Mexico,” said Ana Paula Ortega, general manager of Fundación EDUCA. “This grant will allow us to continue to enhance the educational experience of underserved students throughout Mexico and give teachers and staff the tools and programs they need to help their students lead more productive lives.”

“The Foundation is pleased to support this well–respected nonprofit that is improving the educational opportunities for thousands of underserved children across Mexico. This partnership will enhance their lives and help to create a brighter future for all,” said Chris Park, president, New York Life Foundation. “We are impressed by and support Fundación EDUCA’s programs, which lead schools on the road to self–sufficiency by giving them the tools to help themselves.”

Seguros Monterrey New York Life, New York Life’s wholly owned Mexican subsidiary, has been a significant supporter of EDUCA since 2001. New York Life Foundation’s grant will build upon this existing relationship and provide additional resources to support EDUCA’s work.

The grant will support four projects: the Annual Training Congress, Creative Libraries, an Enterprise Reserve Planning System, and Organizational Reengineering and Continuous Improvement Programs.

  • EDUCA’s Annual Training Congress
The Congress occurs in July, lasts six days and provides 45 hours of training for teachers and directors. The Foundation’s support will enable 100 additional teachers to attend the training.

  • Creative Libraries
Dedicated spaces will be identified in ten underperforming schools. Enrichment materials and activities will be provided around four themes: reading, technology, the arts and creative play. The Creative Libraries will help kids to learn in different ways, acquire new skills and renew a love of learning.

  • Enterprise Reserve Planning System
A new ERP system will be implemented to improve EDUCA’s data gathering, financial tracking and reporting capabilities.

  • Organizational Reengineering and Continuous Improvement Programs
These programs assist the schools with their organizational structure, their financial sustainability, their training and development of staff and their educational quality. In collaboration with the schools, EDUCA helps strengthen their boards of trustees, fundraising infrastructure and diversify their funding sources.
