As New York Life Agent Greg Barnhart, Boardman Ohio Sales Office, sees it, his job is not to simply sell products to his clients, but to uncover problems and provide solutions for them. “If a client is concerned about their child getting into trouble at school, well, I can’t help them,” Barnhart says with an easy chuckle. “But, if they’re concerned about ensuring their family is protected if something was to happen to them? That I can help with.”
“It’s important,” emphasizes Barnhart, “for my clients to know that I am a Life insurance professional. And when it comes to setting aside money for monthly expenses, I feel as if Life insurance is every bit as important as cable TV or gas for your car. I honestly don’t know if you can put a price on a product that can help take away the anxieties and fears of your loved ones.”
A former warehouse supervisor and high school football coach, Barnhart has developed a passion for his job since joining the Company over eleven years ago. “I truly listen to my clients — it’s key. This allows me to provide them with the right protection based on their specific needs. You have to have a conviction to do what’s right for the client 100% of the time,” he states.
“At New York Life, we talk about insurance being a selfless gift and it really is. As an agent, I listen to my clients to help them make the appropriate choices. I try to incorporate that same sense of selflessness into every aspect of my work as well.”
This passion and conviction was reinforced for Barnhart even more strongly when one of his close friends and client lost his wife suddenly this past July.
“She left her husband and two small children,” he says, “it was very tragic. My client, however, was able to take time off from work and spend time with his children. They needed time to adjust and get through all the ‘firsts:’ first time back to school without their Mom, first time at the park without her, and so on.”
Says Barnhart, “The proceeds from the client’s insurance policy couldn’t heal the sadness, but it did it allow her husband time to grieve, and time to take an extended leave from his job. This gave him the ability to help the kids adjust and get settled. He has just recently returned to work. It makes me feel comforted to know that my planning made a difference in some way.”
Being a parent of three, along with his wife Kathy, Barnhart understands the importance of ensuring families are protected. “At New York Life, we talk about insurance being a selfless gift and it really is. As an agent, I listen to my clients to help them make the appropriate choices. I try to incorporate that same sense of selflessness into every aspect of my work as well.”
