NEW YORK, N.Y., March 19, 2009 – New York Life Insurance Company announced today that Chris Blunt and Mark Pfaff have been elected executive vice presidents by the company’s Board of Directors. The two executives report to President and Chief Executive Officer Ted Mathas.
Mr. Pfaff is responsible for U.S. Life Insurance and Agency, which includes the company’s career agency distribution and its life insurance manufacturing and marketing. Mr. Blunt is responsible for Retirement Income Security, an organization formed in November that includes income and investment annuities, long-term care insurance and the distribution of mutual funds.
President and CEO Mathas said, “Both Mark and Chris have outstanding records of executive leadership. Their promotions reflect their many contributions and the size and importance of these two key business operations. Mr. Blunt and Mr. Pfaff also are both members of New York Life’s Executive Management Committee, which is comprised of its senior executive leadership and assists the CEO in setting policy for the company.
Mr. Blunt joined the company in 2004 as executive vice president at New York Life Investment Management, where he was responsible for Retail Investments. In March 2007, he was elected senior vice president and chief operating officer for the Life and Annuity operations of New York Life Insurance Company, and in 2008 was appointed head of Retirement Income Security.
Prior to joining New York Life Investment Management, Mr. Blunt was chairman and chief executive officer of GivingCapital, Inc., a wealth management solutions provider serving the financial institutions marketplace, and before that spent 14 years in a variety of senior marketing and distribution roles in the investment management industry. Mr. Blunt was the chief marketing officer – Americas, for Merrill Lynch Investment Managers, and president of Mercury Funds Distributors. Before working with Merrill Lynch, he was a managing director with Goldman Sachs & Co., and the national sales manager for Goldman Sachs Funds. Mr. Blunt graduated from the University of Michigan and holds an M.B.A. from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He and his wife, Gretchen, reside in Rowayton, Connecticut.
Mr. Pfaff joined New York Life in 1985 as an agent in the Central Jersey General Office. He became sales manager in 1988, and in 1994, was appointed managing partner of the Vermont General Office. In 1997 Mr. Pfaff transferred as managing partner to the Park Avenue General Office; later that year he was promoted to agency vice president of Northeastern Agencies. In 1999, he became the zone vice president of Northeastern Agencies, and in the fall was asked to take over the Manhattan General Office as managing partner. In April 2004, he was named senior vice president of Northeastern Agencies and became senior vice president of the company’s Agency Department in January of 2006. He was appointed senior vice president in charge of U.S. Life Insurance and Agency in 2008. Mr. Pfaff received a B.A. from Manhattan College and an A.A. degree from Westchester Community College. He resides in Charlotte, Vermont with his wife, Claudia, and their three children.
