Ask any New York Life Agent and they’ll tell you that it’s real-life stories about clients that make the case for purchasing Life insurance. But for Agent Brett Sause, LUTCF, LTCP, CLTC, of the Annapolis, Maryland Sales Office, his real life story is even more personal.
When Sause was 17, his father, just 52 years old at the time, was diagnosed with colon cancer. His story involves his parents and the challenges they faced during his father’s illness.

“Our family Agent, who’s now been with New York Life for 54 years, was always looking out for my family — even if my parents thought he may have been a little too eager,” he explained. “My parents bought a New York Life policy when they were first married, and again when they built their home. When my sister was born, they bought another and when I was born still another. When they needed to plan for college and retirement, again they bought a policy.”
At the time Sause’s father became ill, he had a total of seven different contracts with New York Life.
“My father was a big believer in owning what he purchased, no renting for him,” Sause recalls. “Because of this, he purchased Whole Life policies instead of Term. Of course this was in the day when folks didn't have a lot of money, and a high paying job was $40k a year.”
Sadly, his father’s cancer progressed. “I watched as my father became more and more sick. Finally, when I was 19 and my father was 53 years young, he lost the battle to cancer.”
Although he was too young to appreciate it at the time, Sause now realizes what New York Life did for his family.
”If it wasn't for the persistency of our family agent and my parents believing what he preached, the outcome would be much different today,” he says. “There’s a lot of craziness that could have happened. Instead, the claim was paid and my mom was able to maintain her financial dignity by paying off debts that were as a result of my father’s treatments. She was able to keep simple things like Christmas and birthdays a fun and happy time — even without dad.”
It’s this personal experience with life insurance that Sause is able to call upon when he’s doing what he calls the toughest part of his job — setting up the first meeting.
“As far as I’m concerned, I’m not a salesman,” Sause says. “I play the role of a financial quarterback. But I can’t do my job unless I can get the appointment. I’m able to use this story about what happened to my family. How my mom got advice after dad died and did everything she was supposed to. I don’t need to make up the importance of Life insurance, I lived it.”
When asked if his career was inspired by his early experience with New York Life, Sause says, thoughtfully, “I don’t think ‘inspired’ is the way I would describe it. What I mean to say is, I was just 19 when my dad died and to be honest, I still had no idea what life insurance had done for my family at that time. I was 26 when I came into insurance, after 15 years in the boat business and three or four years in construction management. But now that I’m older I can draw upon my experience and it’s motivated me to do my job to the best of my ability.”
He adds “I know that people buy Life insurance because they love someone. And I’m living proof. It could have been a lot different.”
