You might be wondering what a day at a "real job" might be like. Imagine you just returned from a one week vacation (Caribbean perhaps?). You sit down at your computer at about 9 a.m., bumming.
Pop open that e-mail (beats doing the spreadsheet which is due tomorrow). What awaits? Maybe some of the following messages:
- From John Q. Studious:
- I am planning to sit for Course 4 this sitting; does anyone have any advice about which material you really need to learn? Study group, anyone?
- From Program Coordinator:
- See the attached note from the SOA Web site with comments about the Course 7 Pre-Test. Don't forget our monthly student meeting next Tuesday.
- From Boss:
- Don't forget we have our regular staff meeting today at 11. Hope your vacation was fun.
- From Project Leader:
- Meeting at 2 tomorrow to discuss the commissions scales and premium rates for the new Whole Life product.
- From the Student Lunch Group:
- They have Italian food at the cafeteria today! Do you want to join us for lunch downstairs at 12:15?
We won't kid you; actuarial science as a career is hard work. There are the exams. There is the challenging professional job. But at New York Life Insurance Company there are also the students and the shared experience to help alleviate the strain.
Our students (and former students) offer the following insights into their experiences at New York Life:
- From the Chief Actuary (a former student):
- "The nicest compliment to our actuarial program and the care we give to actuaries both as trainees and following attainment of Fellowship is that so many of our actuaries started here right from college and have stayed ever since. It is equally gratifying to hear from those who have come to New York Life from prior actuarial employers how much they like the actuarial spirit and esprit dé corps at New York Life."
- From a former intern and now a full-time student:
- "I was very attracted by the feeling of having a smaller community created by the student program within a larger company."
- From some of our other students:
- "I came to New York Life because the recruiter told me I would be joining the Harvard of insurance companies. I was not disappointed. NYL has an outstanding student program and a great working environment. There is a great sense of camaraderie within the company."
- "The best thing about the student program is the students. As I've gotten to know the students, I've come to realize that all of them are talented in many different ways they're not just exam-taking drones."
- "Within six months of joining New York Life, you will know every other student and many of the Fellows, whether you want to or not."
