New York Life Insurance Company sometimes becomes separated from our policyholders and their beneficiaries — usually because we haven't been notified of name or address changes. We are, however, committed to restoring unclaimed funds to their rightful owners. If after our own extensive search we are unable to contact the owner of the funds, we remit them to the state, in accordance with Abandoned Property Law.
You can search our records of unclaimed assets remitted to the states for funds that may be owed to you or a member of your family. If you find your name in our database, you can contact the state to obtain a reimbursement of these funds.

- What are Unclaimed Funds?
Unclaimed Funds are defined as financial assets that have been left inactive by the owner for three or more years. Each state has different requirements but generally the dormancy period for escheating funds to the state is three to five years. In the example of a check distribution, the dormancy period is defined as the period of time that has elapsed from the check issuance date.
- How do I find out if New York Life remitted unclaimed funds to the State on my behalf?
Search for your name on our database.
If you find your name on the search result list, your funds were escheated to the state applicable to your last known address. To submit a claim for these funds you must select the state from the link above. You will be prompted to complete the appropriate claim form and most states will require the following additional support:
Copy of current photo identification
Social Security number
Verification of reported address if different from current address
If you don't find your name on the New York Life’s database, but think you may have other unclaimed funds, you may visit a State’s Abandoned Property web site and search for any records that may have been escheated on your behalf.
- What kind of funds becomes unclaimed?
The most common types of Unclaimed Funds are:
Uncashed checks (dividends, premium refunds as a result of customer overpayment, payroll checks, etc.)
Matured or terminated insurance policies
Insurance Benefits/Policies
Health payments
Trust Funds
Estate Proceeds
- How can I find out the dollar amount of the funds?
All of the records listed in New York Life’s web site are for amounts greater than $50. To protect the confidentiality of the owner, we do not disclose the specific unclaimed funds dollar amounts. Once you submit your claim with the state you will be informed by the state of the dollar amount you are entitled to.
- Is there a time limit or fee for claiming unclaimed funds held by the state?
The states act as the custodians of the property that has been deemed abandoned. There is no expiration time period to claim these funds and the state does not impose a fee for you to recover the funds.
- When I make a claim from the state, how long will it take to obtain my funds?
Claims processing times do vary from state to state. A claim submitted to the state may take between 30 to 180 days to get processed.
- Will I be paid interest on the funds?
The States will only pay interest on interest bearing items, such as savings accounts.
- What if the owner listed is deceased?
States have different requirements for processing claims. Generally you will be required to provide documentation such as death certificate, letters of testamentary, proof of the account owner's connection with the last known address, etc.
- How frequently is this database updated?
The database is updated once a year in May with records escheated to the state in the prior calendar year. Any item in excess of $50 that is escheated to the state in the prior year is included in the annual update.
