Advanced Planning Group Staff Bios
The Advanced Planning Group staff is comprised of nearly 30 experienced professionals with more than 300 combined years of experience assisting New York Life agents and their clients with wealth and business planning objectives in numerous concentrations, such as business protection and succession, nonqualified executive benefit strategies, tax diversification and reduction strategies, transnational planning (for non-U.S. citizens), estate tax mitigation, and charitable planning.
Brian Madgett, CLU®, ChFC®, leads the Advanced Planning Group. His renowned skills as a professional leader, trainer, presenter, and educator have provided him the opportunity to give more than 600 public seminars and create selected training and sales tools used nationally. Brian began his life insurance career as an agent in the Denver General Office in 1992. He qualified for Council and MDRT every full year as an agent including the prestigious Chairman’s Council. He also has served NYL as a Development Manager, Training Supervisor, Pacific Zone Life Product Consultant, and Zone Life Sales Officer. Brian earned a Bachelor of Science degree from John Jay College.
Alan Chew, JD, CPA, CLU®, ChFC®, supports the Chinese cultural market in his role as an Advanced Planning Consultant. He has been providing tax and consulting services to the financial services industry since 1995 with prestigious private sector companies and the U.S. Merit Systems Protection Board. Serving New York Life since 2004, he started his career as a Case Development Consultant with The Nautilus Group®. Alan holds a BBA with honors and a master’s degree in professional accounting from The University of Texas at Austin, and a JD, graduating cum laude, from Southern Methodist University. Alan is fluent in Mandarin and other Chinese dialects.
Dale T. Facey
Dale T. Facey, JD, leads the New York Life Compliance Department at the Advanced Planning Group and The Nautilus Group. He emphasizes a consultative approach to compliance, working closely with agents and staff to find solutions addressing goals and objectives while meeting regulatory requirements and protecting the interests of all parties. Dale earned a BSBA in Human Resources Management from Western New England College in Springfield, MA, and his Juris Doctor from the Villanova University School of Law in Villanova, PA.
Gerry Gaeta, JD, MSFS®, supports the South Central Zone in his role as an in-house Advanced Planning Consultant. He has conducted seminars and educational programs for affluent and business owner clients and advisors throughout the country on trust, tax, charitable, asset protection, and investment related topics. Gerry earned his law degree from New York Law School.
Pete Gibbons, MEd, CLU®, ChFC®, LUTCF®, AEP®, supports the West Central Zone in his role as an in-house Advanced Planning Consultant. With more than 40 years in the industry, he has acquired a talent for communicating complex information to agents, their clients and advisors. Pete earned his BBA and MEd from the University of Memphis, and taught LUTC and CLU® classes for more than 20 years. He is currently a national board member for the National Association of Estate Planners and Councils (NAEPC).
J.D. Harness, JD, an Advanced Planning Consultant, serves on the Agent Development Team. Along with preparing case analyses for high net worth individuals and business owners, he supports specialized projects for NYLIC U, and is a fundamental member of the Coaching Series; a proprietary program for select agents to learn how to build trust and credibility with high net worth individuals and business owners. J.D. started with New York Life in 2001 at The Nautilus Group. In the very early days of J.D.’s career, he was a Tax Auditor for the Internal Revenue Service. J.D. earned his law degree from the University of Houston and his B.B.A. in finance from the University of Texas at Austin.
Jeff Hatchman, JD, MSFS®, MBA, MSM®, CLU®, ChFC®, CFP®, FLMI®, CASL®, RICP®, AEP®, is the Advanced Planning Consultant for the Northeastern Zone. He has served New York Life and its agents since 1975 in various capacities. His experience, advanced education, and keen business acumen impart him with a vastly broad and thorough knowledge of this industry and other relevant areas. Jeff is a graduate of the University of California at Irvine, and has an MBA degree from the University of Southern California. He received his law degree from Loyola Law School and his Masters of Science in Financial Services and Masters of Science in Management from the American College. Jeff is a member of the California and Texas State Bars, the Society of Financial Service Professionals, and the Association of Advanced Life Underwriters.
Patrick Hoffman, JD, LL.M., supports the West Central Zone in his role as an in-house Advanced Planning Consultant on the Case Design Team. He thrives in the large case design space, and enjoys working with agents to meet their clients’ goals and objectives. Patrick joined New York Life at The Nautilus Group in 2004 and began dedicating his talent solely to the Advanced Planning Group in 2009. Prior to joining New York Life, Patrick worked both as a practicing attorney and as a member of a financial planning firm. Patrick earned a Bachelor of Arts in English from Texas Wesleyan University in Ft. Worth; a law degree from Washburn University School of Law; and an LL.M. in Taxation from Southern Methodist University in Dallas.
Jeanmarie Holm, JD, is a manager at the Advanced Planning Group. She oversees the team of advanced planning professionals on the Case Design Team. Jeanmarie joined New York Life in 2009 with more than 23 years of experience in estate planning, business planning, executive benefits, and qualified and charitable planning. Jeanmarie has been a featured speaker at industry sponsored meetings and has been published in The Journal of Financial Service Professionals. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science, graduating cum laude, from Ramapo College in Mahwah, NJ, and earned her JD from Western New England College School of Law in Springfield, MA, where she served as the Research Editor of the Law Review.
Greg Holmgren, CLU®, ChFC®, is the Advanced Agent Development Officer for New York Life. He leads a team that works with top agents, their clients and their clients’ advisors, to enable those clients to achieve their specific financial goals and solve related obstacles. He speaks to groups around the country about financial strategies and key planning issues that impact their lives. With more than 31 years of insurance industry experience, 28 of which in the employ of New York Life, he brings a wealth of applicable knowledge to every situation. Greg holds a B.A. degree from Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois.
John Irvin, CLU®, ChFC®, CPA, serves on the Advanced Planning Analytics Team. He is dedicated to helping agents understand complex legal and financial techniques that may help clients accomplish personal and financial goals. John has an extensive professional background in corporate and personal taxation and debt restructuring. With more than 23 years at New York Life, he has had the opportunity to work closely with the best agents in the industry. John graduated from Mississippi State University.
Mark Jansen, JD, CPA, CLU®, ChFC®, is the Advanced Planning Consultant for the South Central Zone. With 23 years in the financial services industry, Mark brings a creative and comprehensive approach to using insurance products in estate and business planning. He is known for his teaching and conversational style of presentation. Mark graduated cum laude from the University of Minnesota Law School.
Bruce Kardon, JD, CLU®, ChFC®, serves on the Agent Development Team at the Advanced Planning Group. He leads the Coaching Series, a proprietary program for select agents to learn how to build trust and credibility with high net worth individuals and business owners. Bruce joined New York Life in 2004. He received his Bachelor’s degree from UCLA, majoring in psychology and political science, and his JD from Southwestern University School of Law in Los Angeles.
Alexander Lee, JD, is an Advanced Planning Consultant for the Pacific Zone. Prior to joining New York Life, he worked for a boutique litigation law firm where he practiced complex litigation, as well as bankruptcy, business succession, and estate planning. Alex obtained his B.A. in economics from Rutgers University and his JD from Emory University School of Law. Alex is fluent in Korean.
Jack Loney, JD, CLU®, CFP®, is an Advanced Planning Consultant for the West Central Zone. His training, education and experience in the areas of estate, business, charitable and retirement planning, including an extensive knowledge of insurance and investment products, provide him with a strong foundation to conduct a number of continuing education classes for financial planners and insurance agents. Jack earned Bachelor of Science degree in education from Northwest Missouri State University, where he majored in social sciences, and a JD from Drake University Law School in Des Moines, Iowa.
Nick Martin, CLU®, ChFC®, MSFS®, supports the Northeastern Zone in his role as an in-house Advanced Planning Consultant. A specialist in advanced solutions and illustration design, he has been in the industry since 1984, and a New York Life employee since 1999. Nick’s thorough understanding of sophisticated insurance solutions derives from his years as a Field Agent, Life Product Consultant, as well as from managing the NYL FTIS Professional and PCS Hotlines in Reno. He earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Lillie Nkenchor, JD, supports the Pacific Zone in her role as an in-house Advanced Planning Consultant. She has written numerous publications for various insurance and legal communications. Lillie serves on several committees dedicated to trust and tax planning. She is currently the President of the National Bar Association’s Tax Section. Lillie obtained her B.S. in Public Health/Biology from Rutgers University and her JD from Seton Hall University School of Law.
Geoff Pfeiffer, JD, CLU®, ChFC®, AEP®, FLMI®, supports the South Central Zone in his role as an in-house Advanced Planning Consultant on the Case Design Team. His areas of experience and knowledge include estate planning, executive benefit plans, and business exit strategies. Geoff is active in industry organizations, including General Agents and Managers Association, NALU, NAIFA, and NAECP. He served as a member of the National Board for the Society of Financial Services Professionals and was President of the Greater Phoenix and Rocky Mountain chapters. Geoff obtained his B.B.A. from the University of Cincinnati and his JD from Cincinnati Law School.
Rick Popper, JD, is an Advanced Planning Consultant for the West Central Zone. With 20 years of industry related experience, Rick’s past professional experiences as a practitioner, consultant, and business owner allow him to bring a unique perspective to his agents and their clients. Rick is a graduate of Auburn University and received his JD from the University of Mississippi.
Melinda Rochelle, JD, LL.M, supports the Northeast Zone in her role as an in-house Advanced Planning Consultant on the Case Design Team. She works with agents to provide technical expertise and real-world experience to the design and implementation of comprehensive wealth transfer plans that minimize gift, estate and generation-skipping transfer tax exposure. Melinda received a B.A., summa cum laude, from the University of Missouri-Columbia. She obtained her JD from the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Law and her Master of Laws in Taxation from Washington University in St. Louis.
Kelli J. Stiles
Kelli J. Stiles, JD, CPA is an Advanced Planning Consultant for the Pacific Zone. With 20 years of experience working with financial advisors and their clients, her knowledge is vast, but is certainly not trumped by the ease at which she is able to build relationships and gain the trust of her agents and clients. Kelli obtained her B.A. in both Accounting and Economics and Finance from Missouri Southern State University, and her law degree from the University of Minnesota.
J. Gary Underwood
J. Gary Underwood, JD, CLU®, ChFC®, supports the Pacific Zone in his role as an in-house Advanced Planning Consultant on the Case Design Team. The author of more than 100 articles in law reviews and financial publications, Gary has twice won the “Best Article of the Year” award from the Journal of Financial Service Professionals. Gary is also author of the book, Doctor’s Guide to Capital Accumulation and Protection. An active member of MENSA, he brings a wealth of knowledge to his agents and their clients. Gary obtained his JD from Vanderbilt Law School, where he helped put himself through law school by selling life insurance.
Carlos Vicent, JD, CLU®, ChFC®, MSFS®, MBA, LL.M, is an Advanced Planning Consultant for the Northeast Zone. Prior to joining the Advanced Planning Group in 2011, Carlos worked extensively with individuals and closely held/family businesses in areas of taxation, estate planning, business planning and retirement planning as a financial advisor and later as an attorney. Carlos holds JD and Masters of Laws in Taxation degrees from Thomas M. Cooley Law School, a Masters of Business Administration from Michigan State University, Masters in Science in Financial Services from the American College, and a Bachelor of Science in Liberal Arts from Excelsior College.
