Ted Mathas is Chairman of the Board and retired Chief Executive Officer of New York Life Insurance Company, the nation’s largest mutual life insurer.

Beginning in July 2008, Mr. Mathas served as the company’s 18th chief executive for 14 years and successfully navigated the organization through both the Great Recession and Global Pandemic. During his tenure, New York Life consistently remained a leading provider of retail life insurance and annuities in America and its assets under management more than tripled to $760 billion. Mr. Mathas retired as CEO on April 15, 2022

Mr. Mathas currently sits on the board of the American Museum of Natural History, where he is chair of the Budget and Finance committee. He also serves on the board of NYDIG, a Bitcoin company, where he is chair of the Audit committee, and he is a member of the Law School Foundation at the University of Virginia. Mr. Mathas recently retired from the board of the American Council of Life Insurers, where he was chair from 2012-13 and 2020-21.

Mr. Mathas graduated with an A.B. from Stanford University, with distinction, in 1989. He received a J.D. from the University of Virginia in 1992, where he was a member of the Virginia Law Review and the Order of the Coif.
