Honoring Hire a Veteran Day.

Article

Duty. Integrity. Grace under pressure. These are qualities any manager would desire in a team member—and these are qualities our military veterans have lived every day while on active duty. New York Life has always sought veterans as potential employees, and beginning in 2016, the company began formalizing our veterans hiring program. In honor of those who have served, Hire Our Heros created Hire a Veteran Day, which falls on July 25th, to spread awareness and create a platform where employers and veterans can network.

Veterans are a key part of our workforce because our success depends on a dynamic, diverse, and highly-skilled talent pipeline. Our hiring initiative involves working with a number of diversity partners to attract veterans to the company, including Hiring our Heroes, Veterans on Wall Street, and HirePurpose.

"Veterans are not only highly skilled, but also bring unique talents and values forged by their years of military service—an unerring sense of duty, integrity, precision, and mission oriented teamwork. Any one of these characteristics would make an employee an asset to New York Life, and veterans bring all of them to the table."

Tammy Mata, Corporate Vice President, Human Resources.

Our NYL-Vets Employee Resource Group plays an important role in helping to identify and attract people who are leaving or have left the military and might be a good fit for New York Life. The group created a Veteran Interview Guide for hiring managers that details how to review military resumes and provides tips for conducting such interviews. Additionally, our NYL-Vets members represent the company at veteran-focused career fairs.

New York Life is a company that supports a diverse workforce and values different perspectives to drive better business outcomes, and an inclusive and welcoming workplace. Additionally, comprehending the range of diversity that exists among our workforce helps us to more effectively recruit, support, and retain employees. In 2016, NYL streamlined the process to self-identify as a veteran — and employees also have the ability to self-identify as LGBT or disabled.

Last year we were honored to have received a silver Military Friendly® Employer Award from Victory Media, the originator of the family of Military Friendly® employment, entrepreneurship and education resources for veterans and their families. We were recognized for being an organization with a revenue of over $1 billion that offers outstanding programs and support for our nation's veterans and their families.  Honoring our commitment to our communities who have served our country is a critical part of our hiring practices on Hire a Veteran day and throughout the year.
