PRIDE isn’t just a month–it’s a movement! That’s why I’m proud to serve as co-chair of NYLPride, New York Life Insurance Company Employee Resource Group (ERG) for the LGBTQ+ community. As a group we are focused on maintaining, encouraging, and nurturing a diverse, open, and inclusive workplace where gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and queer or questioning employees can maximize their professional growth and contribute fully to their individual success and that of New York Life. Growing up in Florida in the early 2000s, I never imaged I’d be part of–let alone lead–such a meaningful organization. Being co-chair for NYLPride has allowed me to play an active role in advancing the themes of intersectionality and inclusion at New York Life. By collaborating with my peers from the other ERGs, together we amplify the diverse voices of employees across the country. In partnership with the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Center for Awareness and Advocacy, we champion workplace equity and advocate for corporate strategies that will better engage with and serve the LGBTQ+ community.
Over the past few years, NYLPride has offered employee programming ranging from panel discussions, gender identity workshops, and events in support of non-profits, to drag bingo! Some of the most impactful events have centered on unpacking what intersectionality means and how best to be an ally. Core to the ethos of our ERGs is providing visibility and growth opportunities for talent at any level, and I am so honored to have played an active role in making this happen. Additionally, our ERG has been a true business resource for our Love Takes Action campaign and marketing approach. We also capitalize on sponsorship opportunities such as local Pride events in cities such as Tampa, Cleveland, Kansas City, New York, and Omaha that showcase New York Life’s commitment to our community. And, this extends beyond our employees to our agents in the field.
Through the ERG, I’ve come to represent the company at industry-wide associations, such as OPENFinance, which provides a forum for financial services institutions to come together, share best practices, and advocate for positive change as an industry, which is an important role that companies can play. In turn, companies rely upon ERGs to help guide their thinking in addressing the needs of their employees, clients, and stakeholders. I’m very grateful for the opportunity to help New York Life build on the proud legacy of LGBTQ+ support and help shape the future of our community for the better.
