Featured New York Life Insurance Agent: Barbara Bobbin–Wilkinson.

Barbara Bobbin Wilkinson

A commitment to community.

Nestled in southern Ocean County, New Jersey, is the quaint, historic town of Tuckerton. Also known as “Clamtown” for its once bustling seaport community, Tuckerton is the kind of small town where you know everyone by name. Visitors come to stroll Main Street, go fishing, crabbing, kayaking, or simply to relax and enjoy the town’s slower pace.

“We are Main Street USA,” says Chairman’s Cabinet Agent Barbara Bobbin-Wilkinson (, South Jersey office, of the town she has called home since the early 1990s. “It’s a very homey place. Many of my clients are small, seasonal businesses owners—mainly mom-and-pop shops—as well as families.“

Barbara’s commitment to her community runs deep. She was determined to help build a local food pantry for people in need, and she refused to let a lack of money get in her way. With that in mind, her office sponsored three fundraisers: the Race for Hunger Grand Prix, a summer sunset cruise (held on a local pirate ship), and a series of educational seminars. Together, these events raised over 75% of the money needed to build the pantry, and today it feeds over 300 local families a month.

“The spirit of these events is amazing,” says Barbara. ”People start talking about them months in advance. We always have a wonderful time, and it’s that much better knowing we’re raising needed funds for a local cause. This community is all about helping one another, and my whole family gets involved, including my two kids. I think it’s very important to give back.”

With her office right in town, it’s no surprise to Barbara when an occasional prospect or client strolls in off the street to discuss their needs. She recalls, “My administrative assistant came into my office and said, ‘There’s a couple downstairs who would like to open an IRA.’ “When I got downstairs, however, they wanted to talk about more than finances.

“In fact, it turned out that they walked in because they saw the New York Life sign. The woman said, ‘My grandfather was a top-producing New York Life Agent for many years, as was my father. I grew up with the New York Life family.’ She continued, jokingly, ‘I let my husband talk me into purchasing insurance with another company many years ago, but you know, they have changed hands, as well as their name, several times. That’s why we want to bring our business to New York Life.’”

“Now that woman and her husband are my clients,” says Barbara. “It’s amazing to think that they live in this small town and we never met before. But the economy and the uncertainty of other companies’ futures led them into my office, and back to New York Life.

“I made the decision to join New York Life years ago, and I am so glad that I did. Our Agents are committed to their clients as well as their communities. The longevity and spirit ( of the company is as strong today as it was in 1934.”
