Investing with your heart

World Heart Day is celebrated annually on September 29 as an opportunity to think about heart disease and heart-related issues. Every year, more than 17 million people around the world die from heart-related illnesses – more than HIV, malaria and cancer combined1. Taking preventative steps and making changes to our lifestyle can help us to avoid cardiovascular disease, from heart attacks and heart failure, to strokes and other conditions.

Taking health to HART

World Heart Day has always been important to New York Life because of our work with the American Heart Association (AHA). But this year, it’s even closer to our hearts because of the launch of our health-focused ESG ETF in alignment with the American Heart Association. The IQ Healthy Hearts ETF (ticker: HART), is the new IQ Dual Impact ETFs by IndexIQ, a a New York Life Investments company, created in alignment with the American Heart Association. It seeks to align health values with investors’ financial goals by investing for both heart health and the fight against health inequity.

But just how does making people healthier align with investors’ financial goals?

How heart health can keep your portfolio beating

Big Tech, pharma, and wellness industries are racing towards heart health solutions — and there’s an expanding market for investors to dive into. In fact, the cardiovascular disease tech market is projected to reach $40B by 20302

Creating an impact

But of course, this ETF isn’t just about investor return potential.. It’s also about supporting people’s health and fighting back against heart disease, the number one killer in the US. To underscore their commitment to promoting better health, NYLIM and IndexIQ are donors to and supporters of AHA’s Social Impact Fund*. Established in 2018, the Social Impact Fund invests in local entrepreneurs and organizations that support programs aimed at addressing the economic and social conditions that can affect a person’s health, such as social cohesion, employment, education, housing and food access.

Heart to HART

These dual goals come together in the IndexIQ Healthy Hearts (ticker: HART) ETF, which offers investors both the potential for attractive returns and the opportunity to give back to the AHA’s social impact fund, NYLIM’s contributions to the AHA’s charitable initiatives are based on a portion of the ETF's management fee. HART tracks the IQ CANDRIAM Healthy Hearts Index, which utilizes positive selection criteria, as well as exclusionary screens, to provide investors with exposure to well-known stocks of global companies involved in heart health. These companies may be diagnosing or treating cardiovascular disease, enabling people to adopt healthier lifestyles, or providing health education.

World Heart Day

So many people have been affected by heart disease, and everyone can benefit from a healthy lifestyle. That’s why New York Life has such a multi-faceted relationship with the AHA. Not just New York Life Investments, but also our Technology and Fitness Center are all working with the AHA towards a heart-healthier future.

ESG Investing Style Risk

Impact investing and/or Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) managers may take into consideration factors beyond traditional financial information to select securities, which could result in relative investment performance deviating from other strategies or broad market benchmarks, depending on whether such sectors or investments are in or out of favor in the market. Further, ESG strategies may rely on certain values based criteria to eliminate exposures found in similar strategies or broad market benchmarks, which could also result in relative investment performance deviating. There is no assurance that employing ESG strategies will result in more favorable investment performance.

The IQ CANDRIAM Healthy Hearts Index seeks to provide investors with exposure to select companies that are involved in the diagnosis and/or treatment of heart disease, or that provide goods or services that allow people to adopt or maintain a healthy lifestyle.
