Dr. Kevin Boehle’s journey to becoming Chief Medical Officer for GBS wasn't a straight line. His years of business experience and clinical practice in family and occupational medicine, and disability assessment for local and national corporations, all came together when he saw an opening for a medical director in the group insurance division at a large insurer. We spoke with Dr. Boehle to learn more about the role of medical officers at our company, as well as some trends that might shape our business in the near future.
What does your role entail?
I oversee about two dozen medical directors with specialties including cardiology, neurology, orthopedic surgery, psychiatry, physical medicine and rehab, and occupational medicine. Since we’re part of GBS, my team primarily handles claims for long- and short-term disability and accidental death and dismemberment. We evaluate whether claimants' clinical conditions prevent them from performing their job duties. As a clinical resource, we consult with GBS Claims Managers and collaborate with our nurses to reach accurate, compliant decisions. We match clinical expertise to each case to ensure decisions are based on board-certified medical physician reviews.
Talk about your career path. How did you go from clinical practice to the insurance industry?
I'm a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine and take a holistic approach to healthcare. I’m trained in internal medicine, family medicine, and occupational medicine. I also earned a Master’s in public health. I have a strong interest in the sports medicine approach to injury and illness care and promoting recovery and return to work. After being in private practice in Colorado for over eight years, I moved to Texas and joined a national urgent care provider, managing injury care for large employers. I joined Cigna as a medical director in 2017, and in 2019, I was promoted to Chief Medical Officer.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever gotten?
It was from a mentor while I was in medical school. He said, you’re going to graduate soon. You’ve made a lot of sacrifices to get here but don’t be in a hurry to rush out and reward yourself. The fast cars and fancy houses will come in time. Plan for your future and make time for your family.
What do you enjoy doing when you’re not in the office?
During the COVID lockdown, my son graduated college and moved back home. One of the activities we took up was antique gun collecting and target shooting. We’ve acquired some old relics and still go shooting together. He’s getting married soon, while his brother has been married for three years, so I’m waiting for some grandchildren.
