The keys to successfully integrating data science into an organization.

Glenn Hofmann, New York Life’s Chief Analytics Officer who leads the company’s Center for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (CDSAi), recently contributed “Five Tips on Leading Your Data Science Function to MLOps Excellence” to the Domino Data Lab blog. His reflections on those actions that contribute to making a data science team successfully integrated into an organization draw from the last 15 years where Glenn has developed data science teams for finance and insurance companies following a career in academia.

When embarking on the journey of building out an enterprise data science function, Glenn’s recommendations include the below.

1. Hire a diverse skill set
2. Promote transparency and data science education
3. Connect frequently and meaningfully
4. Align with all stakeholders
5. Invest in technology infrastructure

As Glenn notes, he is incredibly proud of the impact CDSAi has had in helping diverse teams at New York Life make model-driven decisions. Functions across Sales, Marketing, Underwriting, and Agency, to name a few, are employing data science to automate critical processes and improve decision making so they can better serve New York Life’s customers.

The team has built a strong foundation — spanning people, processes, and technologies — and has been crucial in helping deliver impacts efficiently and collaboratively. The team continues to scale the data science capability across New York Life.
