Girls Who Code (GWC) is an organization committed to closing the gender gap in technology and preparing students for in-demand jobs in emerging technologies and artificial intelligence (AI), ensuring that they keep pace with a rapidly changing industry. A proud sponsor, New York Life recently hosted a “tech tour” for over 50 GWC high school students from across Manhattan, Queens, and the Bronx for a day of learning, collaboration, and inspiration.
“Our GWC partnership provides a tremendous opportunity to align the subject matter experts across New York Life’s Technology, Artificial Intelligence & Data, and other teams with an organization that inspires, educates, and equips the next generation of technologists with the skills to succeed,” explained Trish Madlangbayan, a corporate vice president with New York Life’s Technology team.
The day’s sessions focused on:
Nancy Sherman, a vice president with New York Life’s Strategic Capabilities team, led the discussion on the importance of having a growth mindset and adding the word “yet” when thinking “I can’t.”
The session included a showing of the video, New York Life’s latest contribution to GWC’s curriculum which is meant to inspire and promote conversation among the 6,000+ GWC clubs across the country. In the piece, New York Life senior associate Ashleigh Knight highlights her career journey and how her own growth mindset led to a variety of opportunities, including with New York Life’s Technology team and now with the company’s Continuous Improvement group.
In reflecting on the day, Sherman shared, “‘I can’t…yet’ is what having a growth mindset is all about. As much as the day was about sharing learnings and inspiration with the students, I came away inspired myself and confident in the next generation of talent that will be entering the workforce before we know it.”
