July 16 was World AI Day, and New York Life marked the occasion by hosting our first AI in Action Day.

The event was the culmination of Ignite AI, a three-month sprint that focused on creating an AI mindset across the company, delivering a robust AI toolset to all employees, and developing an AI skillset to lead the company forward.

“The world around us is changing so rapidly,” said Head of Talent Management Tina Gupta. “This is our moment to show the world — lead through example — how we’re able to innovate, how we’re able to drive impact.”

AI Ignited!

From over 200 submissions, 15 employees were selected from across the company to demonstrate their custom GPTs, Copilot Agents and other ways they are using AI to work faster and smarter, in an expo-style format.

“Every one of the folks that you saw today raised their hands, submitted their ideas, and they’re proud of the work they’ve done,” said Head of Change Management Melissa Wood. “That’s what this is all about — everybody taking the initiative and jumping right in.”

Three finalists

It was clear from the demonstrations that our employees are truly embracing AI and that it is helping accelerate the company’s strategic priorities. There were three AI in Action Day finalists, and the winner was selected by a panel of four judges: Gupta; Chief Data and Analytics Officer Don Vu; Head of Foundational Business Operations and Shared Services Will Colon; and Head of Group Benefit Solutions’ Strategy, Solutions and Marketing Meg Shea.

Winner: Katelyn Connor, Purchase Experience Value Stream

The challenge: Business analysts were spending 50% of their time manually writing Agile user stories, slowing product delivery.

The solution: By uploading wireframes into ChatGPT with Agile prompts, analysts now generate high-quality draft stories in minutes — freeing up time for strategy and stakeholder alignment.

Runner-Up: Amrita Tiwari, NYL Investment Management

The challenge: Reviewing unstructured fund commentary PDFs was slow and manual.

The solution: Tiwari’s team built the DocIntel Analyzer, an AI agent that extracts key insights — like performance drivers and market views — across documents. Prompt-based workflows enable fast comparisons and summaries.

Runner-Up: John Masson, NYL Ventures

The challenge: Mapping indirect exposure to startups from venture capital fund PDFs was tedious and manual.

The solution: The custom GPT VentureView AI extracts startup names, cost and fair value from PDFs into a standardized table — saving hundreds of hours annually.

AI in Action Day was more than a showcase — it was a snapshot of what’s possible when teams across New York Life are empowered to explore, experiment and lead.
