Shea emphasized findings that suggest employers need to provide more support to employees who care for loved ones with special needs.
New York Life Group Benefit Solutions’ (GBS) recent caregiver study is gaining the attention of the media. Meg Shea, head of distribution at GBS, was recently interviewed by Employee Benefits News (EBN) for the article “The hidden strain of special-needs caregiving on today's workforce.”
The study looked at the impact of special needs caregiving on the caregivers themselves and how the effects can trickle into the workplace. The report noted that these responsibilities are often like a second full-time job and uncovered some gaps in employer support.
“Without the right support, it's nearly impossible to maintain that balance,” Shea told EBN. “Employers who recognize caregiving as a workforce issue, not just a personal one, can make a meaningful difference by supporting employees in their personal lives so they can thrive professionally.… If we can create cultures within employers that increase people feeling comfortable sharing that they've taken on caretaking duties, I think that would be like a really good outcome of bringing awareness to this topic.”
