New York Life appoints Scott Berlin as head of Group Benefit Solutions business.

New York - New York Life, America’s largest1 and most admired2 mutual life insurer today announced that Scott Berlin, senior vice president, will assume the role of head of its Group Benefit Solutions business, effective August 2, 2021. Mr. Berlin will continue to report to Alain Karaoglan, senior vice president who oversees the company’s portfolio of strategic insurance businesses, and succeeds William J. Smith, senior vice president, who will retire at the end of this year.

“Scott’s impressive track record of success in a variety of senior roles at New York Life positions him well to oversee our group benefit solutions business moving forward,” said Mr. Karaoglan. “We thank Bill for his leadership in keeping the integration into New York Life on track and creating a strong foundation on which Scott and the team will continue to build.”

Mr. Berlin joined New York Life as an actuarial trainee in 1990. In 1996, he joined the Individual Life Department, where he held roles of increasing responsibility including senior vice president in charge of the Individual Life department. He was named chief financial officer of New York Life Enterprises in 2010, where he was responsible for overseeing financial results of all Enterprises’ international and domestic businesses. Mr. Berlin was named head of Institutional Life and business development in 2012, and head of the Group Membership Association Division in 2013. 

Mr. Berlin earned a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from the University of Michigan, is a fellow of the Society of Actuaries, and a member of the American Academy of Actuaries.
